About Dirne Community Health Center
How it all started...
It all started in 1989 with the vision and passion of Lidwin
Dirne. Originally from Holland, and then Canada, Lidwin Dirne
came to Coeur d'Alene and was struck by the lack of access to
healthcare for under and uninsured families in Coeur d'Alene.
She helped start a volunteer-run free clinic in Coeur d'Alene
16 years ago to serve the uninsured. The clinic was open only
two nights a week, and sometimes only one doctor was available.
There were too many patients.
So the clinic board of directors sought and won federal
funding in 2003 to become a community health clinic under a
program designed to improve access to health care for people
without insurance. With a new personality, the Dirne Clinic,
which took on Lidwin's name in 1999, opened its doors five days
a week with a paid staff in February 2004.

borrowed with permission from Cynthia Taggart's July 11, 2005
article in the Spokesman Review. The article describes the
history of the clinic and the challenges of serving Kootenai
County's uninsured and underinsured patients.
